General Information

What is a GTRO?

The GTRO is a 3-speed planetary gearbox, all built compactly into the right crank and made right here in the UK.

Will the GTRO be compatible with my bicycle frame?

The GTRO is compatible with all frames fitted with a traditional BSA/English bottom bracket shell.
The GTRO is not compatible with centre-drive frames or those fitted with a non-BSA/English bottom bracket shell.

The most common applications for the GTRO are, but not limited to: Folding, Cargo, Road, Fat Tyre, Hybrid, etc.

Can I use the GTRO with a rear hub motor/gearbox?

Indeed you can. The GTRO is compatible with almost all motor, internal geared and fixed sprocket rear hubs. Due to this, the GTRO is a quick and simple upgrade anyone can make to their drivetrain.

Non-compatible models are systems which require torque sensing bottom brackets, centre-drive motor/gearboxes, traditional derailleur systems, or rely on the ability to pedal backwards.

Does the GTRO work with chain or belt?

The GTRO works seamlessly with both chain-drive and belt-drive!

So long as your belt/chain-ring is 5-arm 130BCD, then your drive system will be fully compatible.

What is the benefit of using the GTRO?

In short, the key benefit to using the GTRO is the ability to instantly upgrade your bicycle with 3 additional gears, without having to modify your frame or purchase a new drive-train system (i.e. motor, hub, chain, etc.). The GTRO is a low maintenance, easy-to-install solution for those who want to effortlessly upgrade their bike; and excels for adding gears to a rear hub motor system where geared options are limited.

Is the gearing right for me?

The GTRO is equipped with 3 perfectly spaced gears, 1st gear (1:1), 2nd gear (1:1.43), and 3rd gear (1.79).

Input your available front/rear gear options and wheel size to the calculator below to see exactly how they translate into real-world performance. This tool helps you confirm that your specific setup covers the range you need for both climbing and cruising.

How durable is the GTRO?

The GTRO is ISO 4210-8 tested and certified, meaning it's as durable as any mountain bike rated crank-set on the market. Additionally, we have completed rigorous on-road, off-road, and inhouse laboratory tests for durability (There are no industry norms for front gearboxes).

On top of it's bulletproof durability, the GTRO is equipped with dynamic seals that protect against water, dust, dirt, and salt ingress.

Does the GTRO require a battery or electricity?

No. The GTRO is a fully mechanical device. No batteries, controllers, wires, screens or apps required!

Warranty Information

How do I submit a warranty claim?

If you wish to submit a warranty claim, please reach out to our customer service for further assistance.

What isn't covered under warranty?

Warranty claims will not be upheld if any damage or defects are caused by abnormal use, lack of maintenance, accidental damage, prolonged exposure to moisture or liquid, such as the following

Taking the gearbox apart

Using unofficial oil/grease

Signs of tampering with the gearbox

Using unoffical components, such as bottom brackets or shifters

User inflicted damage to the gearbox such as, but not limited to:

o Incorrect cable management.

o Incorrect belt tension.

o Over/under-tightening the gearbox outside of recommended torque levels.

o Jet washing gearbox seals

o Improper maintenance/servicing

o Accidental damage inflicted by mishandling.

How long is my warranty period?

All GTRO gearboxes are equipped with a standard 1 year out-the-box warranty.

Maintenance & Care

How often do I need to service my gearbox?

We recommend servicing your GTRO with 1ml of GTRO maintenance oil every 1000 miles.

Use the official GTRO maintenance oil that's provided with your order, OR purchased directly off our site.

Failing to use official GTRO maintenance oil will void your warranty.

The crank bolt should be checked as part of routine cycle maintenance. Do NOT tighten beyond 40Nm.

How do I service my gearbox oil?

Servicing your gearbox oil is a quick and easy process. Simply follow the below steps:

Locate and remove the oil service bung from fill hole located on the gearbox body.

Using the pipette provided with your service oil, inject ~1ml of oil (one full pipette) into the fill hole.

Re-insert the oil service bung into the fill hole, and slowly shift through each gear while rotating the cranks.

To finish, wipe away any remaining excess oil from the service.

What's the best way to clean my GTRO?

DO gently clean with a microfibre cloth and warm soapy water to maintain the
appearance and prevent the buildup of road grit and dirt

DO NOT jet/power wash. This can potentially damage the gearbox seals and can
wash out gearbox lubrication. Doing so will void gearbox warranty.

DO NOT use harsh cleaning chemicals. This may cause damage to the exterior
paint of the gearbox.

Troubleshooting

"My gearbox feels tight to turn"

Check belt/chain tension, and the belt/chain-line, to ensure this isn’t too tight and putting the gearbox under tension. Also check the condition of the belt and beltring for damage.

"The belt is skipping"

If you experience belt skipping, check the condition of the beltring and belt. Common signs of a damaged beltring are a consistent clunking noise and significant vibration through the gearbox.

"There is play in the beltring, Is this normal?"

Yes, the gearbox features a free-floating spider that allows the belt-ring to find its natural line and move to suit the rear sprocket. As a result side-to-side movement is completely normal and is no cause for concern.

“My gearbox is making some noise, is this normal?”

Yes it is. Due to the mechanical nature of the gearbox, with multiple components moving, shifting, and causing friction, a small amount of noise is normal.

If a significant amount of noise is coming from the gearbox, grinding, high pitched noises etc. Please contact customer support for further assistance.

“My gearbox is difficult to shift/not shifting.”

Reduce pedal pressure during a shift to allow for a smoother, faster shift. Applying more pressure will prevent the gearbox from falling into gear.

“Why is there oil leaking from my gearbox?”

The gearbox is equipped with multiple seals which will allow for oil to expel when levels inside exceed the required amount; therefore, a small amount of oil leaking can occur for a small period after manufacture or maintenance.
